Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre

Created for the Salvation Army, the Centre is an educational and recreational resource centre for one of our city's most multicultural communities. The building was designed to integrate form and program with an adjacent public park, and natural wood was used throughout to convey an intimate human quality despite its scale (1000 m2, budget of $5.4 million). The Centre also promotes ecological responsibility: it was awarded a 3-Globe rating under the Green Globes® sustainability certification program.  Associated consultant on the project was Affinity Architecture Inc.

Institutional

Winnipeg Adult Education Centre

This project adapted a heritage building with a new and exciting modern addition providing classrooms, resource spaces, and labs. Employing a cantilevered hollowcore floor system and a striking and minimalist curtain wall, the building allows urban transparency, daylighting and a passive solar heat sink. The project was awarded the Architectural Masonry Design Award of Excellence by the Manitoba Masonry Institute and has been featured in several publications.

Isbister School, one of the first three-storey school buildings in Winnipeg is the oldest public school building in Winnipeg. Designed by Samuel Hooper before he became Provincial Architect in 1904, Isbister School functioned as a public school from 1899 until 1966. The school has served as the Winnipeg Adult Education Centre since 1967. Much of the interior, including the magnificent stairway, is largely in its original condition, presenting a rare image of a Winnipeg school at the turn of the century

Designed with David Penner as the Penner/Prins Architectural Collective.

Schools & Community Facilities

We have been responsible for a number of other schools and community centres, from completely new-build projects to renovations and upgrades. These range from projects where the building is an important cultural symbol -- our First Nation Peguis work -- to others where the challenge is manily technical -- chemistry lab renovations.
